What are Spinal Injuries?

Spinal cord injuries result from any damage to the spinal cord, blocking communication between the brain and the body. Spinal cord injuries often result in changes in strength, sensation, and other body functions below the site of the damage. These changes may be permanent. It is estimated that 12,500 spinal cord injuries occur in the U.S. every year. Each person’s path to recovery from a spinal cord injury is different.

Back Problems?

Back pain refers to pain in the lower back, middle back, and upper back or low back pain with sciatica. Many people have experienced back pain at least once with symptoms ranging in intensity from mild to severe. Because the lumbar area supports most of the weight of the upper body, it is the most common area for back pain. Back pain is typically described as dull, shooting or piercing or a burning sensation. Treatments include rest, medications, physical therapy, and in some cases, spine surgery.

Conditions From Spinal Injuries Or Back Pain Include:

Bulging Disc

The Disc is bulging outside the space it usually occupies between your vertebrae.

Herniated Disc

Part of the center nucleus pushes through the outer edge of the disk and back toward the spinal canal. It is a common source of back pain.

Pinched Nerve

A pinched nerve occurs when there is “compression” (pressure) on a nerve.

Fractured Vertebrae

The bones in your spine (vertebrae) break or collapse due to trauma or injuries from falls or car accidents.

Spondylolisthesis

This is a slipping of vertebrae that occurs mainly at the base of the spine.

Spinal Stenosis

The small spinal canal, which contains the nerve roots and spinal cord, becomes compressed. This compression causes a “pinching” of the spinal cord and or nerve roots, which leads to pain, cramping, weakness or numbness.

Treatments For Spinal Injuries and Back Pain offered by Omni include:

Laminectomy

Also known as decompression surgery, creates space by removing the lamina – a part of the vertebra that covers your spinal canal. It relieves pressure on your spinal cord or nerves.

Endoscopic Discectomy

A minimally invasive procedure to remove the herniated disc material that is causing pain in the lower back.

ACDF

Anterior Cervical Discectomy and Fusion (ACDF) is a surgical procedure that treats nerve root or spinal cord compression by decompressing the spinal cord and roots of the cervical spine.

Foraminectomy

Removing large amounts of bone to relieve pressure on the nerves that are being compressed by the intervertebral foramina.

Kyphoplasty/Vertebroplasty

A minimally invasive procedure used to treat vertebral compression fractures of the spine and reduce or relieve back pain.

Microdiscectomy

A minimally invasive technique to provide relief from pain caused by a lumbar herniated disc.

Total Disc Replacement

TDR is a minimally invasive spinal surgery used to treat damaged and degenerated spinal discs. During the procedure, the degenerated disc is removed and replaced with an artificial disc. Age, genetics, traumatic accidents and normal wear and tear can all lead to disc degeneration that requires surgical repair.

Spinal Fusion

This technique is used to correct problems with vertebrae. Two or more bones are fused together to heal as a single, solid bone. Spinal Fusion is done to eliminate pain and restore stability to the spine.
